Subliminal Man

designed and built by Kevin McCormick and Carl Gruesz
[ return to projects ]

Subliminal Man is a persistence-of-vision display. It was the first such display Carl and I built, and it led to the development of Obelisk and Obelisk 2. Subliminal Man is a 22 foot long array of 16 red LED bars, mounted on a 35 foot tall steel TV antenna mast. When you sweep your eyes past the tower, the rapidly flashing LEDs create a low-res image on your retina in black and red.

The tower was first built with wood in August of 1998, but we rebuilt and redesigned it for Burning Man 2000. Subliminal Man was installed out on the open playa, on axis with the mile-long Spine, beyond the Head. Standing alone in the darkness, it displayed the Burning Man logo, floating against the backdrop of the mountains.
